Southern Gothic is a type of literature that focuses on harsh conflicts of violence and racism, observed from the perspectives of black and white individuals. Some of the best-known southern authors are William Faulkner, Flannery O'Connor, and Cormac McCarthy. One author in particular, Flannery O'Connor, is a remarkable author, who directly reflects on the grotesquerie of the South in his two short stories, "A Good Man is Hard to Find" and "Revelation." These two short stories are very similar, which is why I believe O'Connor often writes with violent characters to denounce real violence in the world while associating them with a particular spiritual vision. refers to southern grotesquerie and violence in "A Good Man is Hard to Find." In this short story, O'Connor portrays to the reader a violent character known as "The Misfit". The Misfit can be described as a distorted and violent character who questions the true meaning of life and his role within it. The Misfit uses the anger he carries within him as a form of violence, and this is why he is known to be a wanted murderer, ever since he escaped from the penitentiary. This misfit was incarcerated when he was accused of murdering his own father, which may have been a lie based on the senior doctors' accusations. O'Connor reveals violence in a very particular way and this is based on the struggle of living in a world where it is difficult to find a good man in our society. O'Connor proves this theory with two characters, the Misfit and the grandmother. The grandmother is defined by her egocentric qualities and her Christian influences from God. The grandmother first recognizes the wanted Misfit... middle of paper... lack of white dresses, with her and Claud standing next to them” (34). This revelation was a wake-up call to Ms. Turpin, and it highlighted the importance to her that everyone be considered equal in the eyes of God, no matter how poor, murderous, or prosperous an individual is. . O'Connor powerfully made the reader realize that having a revelation opens our minds to a clearer vision, and this was seen with the grandmother in "A Good Man is Hard to Find" and Mrs. Turpin in "Revelation" . Nonetheless, O'Connor also created characters with a certain type of violence deeply ingrained in their personality to show the importance of real-life experiences within our society. Both of these short stories show a great amount of emotion and life lessons for the reader, and O'Connor managed to convey his point of view while using his powerful Southern Gothic writing technique..
