Facebook and other social media platforms have taken communication across the world to a whole new level. The rise of social media has created a space for children to connect with others in both positive and negative ways. While this has had a positive impact on America's youth, it has also contributed to and exacerbated bullying in our schools. This new form of bullying, often called cyberbullying, has created a 24-hour atmosphere where bullying can occur even when school is not in session. Many professionals have sought to address the negative aspects of social media and worked to develop a solution to stop cyberbullying. Besides cyberbullying, there are many other negative outcomes for American youth from using social media websites like Facebook. For example, many teens use shorthand and abbreviations when writing or communicating online. Additionally, teenagers get lost in social media, ignore their surroundings and even become addicted to social media. The consequences are an increase in obesity, a devaluation within the family, a lack of exercise and a reduction in concentration on school and homework. Adolescents who use social media more often than others are more prone to “narcissistic tendencies,” “anxiety, depression, and other psychological disorders” (Protalinski, 2011). American youth who share more online also display manic, aggressive and antisocial behavior. Cyberbullying has increased since the creation of social media sites and the rise of the Internet. Although statistics regarding cyberbullying vary widely, anywhere from ten to forty percent or more of teenagers have reportedly been victims of online bullying.
