  • Essay / Equality and Socioeconomic Status: An Analysis

When Native Americans are mocked and constantly reminded that their ancestors were torn apart and treated as savages by white men, it is difficult to pick up the pieces and to move on. Native Americans shouldn't even be associated with savages or racial slurs, but that's what happens when natives are seen as mascots. For example, at one point OSU was playing a team with a Native American mascot and they had on a banner: "Send Them Home on a Trail of Tears" (Charles). The Trail of Tears is not an event to be scoffed at, as it moved the Cherokee tribe from their home state of Georgia to the state of Oklahoma, and over 4,000 Cherokees died when moving (Trail of Tears, PBS). This shows that even if a minority socio-economic group works for the advancement in the world of the majority socio-economic group, some people from the majority socio-economic group will find anything and do anything to maintain the barriers between the two.
