Essay / Hospital-acquired infection This study was conducted to inform national LTC policy and to plan for the future of HCAI programs. With earlier discharges and societal changes, an increasing number of people are being cared for in long-term care facilities. However, this study was not primarily focused on older adults. LTCH residents vary in age, length of stay, and associated illness. The LTCF may be based in an individual's home. In the Republic of Ireland there is a mix of public and private healthcare systems – 75% private and 25% public. Say no to plagiarism. In a study carried out between 1994 and 1995 evaluating six different aged care homes in the west of Ireland, results showed that out of 56 residents, 26 were reported to have contracted MRSA within the care home. This suggests that infection control interventions would likely impact MRSA prevalence. ESAC (European Surveillance of Antimicrobial Consumption) has carried out studies to calculate the use of antibiotics. In April 2009, 304 LTCFs from twenty different countries (including 18 Irish) participated. It was found that antibiotic prescribing was highest in Ireland at 10.5%, compared to the overall European percentage of 5.9%. These studies highlight the clear connection between long-term care facilities and health care. These infections pose a major threat to patient safety because they expose people to other health problems. Around 7% of European patients contract HAIs, representing a burden of around £1 billion to £11 billion for Britain. There are approaches to solve this problem. The British Medical Association (BMI) has published recommendations on how to resolve this HAI problem and outline a new action plan to counter this problem. Major changes to the guidelines focused on policies addressing microorganisms (particularly methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Clostridium difficile) to policies aimed at reducing rates of HAIs (e.g., surgical site infections, pneumonia under assisted ventilation and urinary infections) and to modify behaviors. The guidelines published by the BMA suggest a wide variety of behavioral and organizational interventions, which cover topics such as prescribing antimicrobials, hand hygiene, screening and isolation, bed occupancy and workload. These behavioral factors include antimicrobial prescribing narrowly focused on antimicrobial use by humans, veterinarians, and agriculture. Improving hand hygiene standards through system change and culture change, based on WHO hand hygiene guidelines. The use of indwelling devices which have multi-modal uses have been shown to be effective, for example these 'care packages' have been used to reduce catheter-related bloodstream infections. There are organizational factors that can address the problem of IAS, such as dress code and the use of personal protective equipment which are essential in maintaining excellent hygiene standards, including no sleeves, absence of jewelry and use of disposable protective clothing.
