On January 30, 1933, Adolf Hitler became Chancellor of Germany. You are about to learn about the rights and responsibilities of Jews in Nazi Germany. Adolf Hitler used propaganda throughout Germany to brainwash people into believing that “the Jews are our misfortune.” One of the tools he used for his propaganda against the Jews was the weekly "der stumer", which meant aggressor. On the front page of all the newspapers it was written in bold letters that the Jews are our misfortune. There were also many caricatures showing Jews as if they had hooked noses. The newspaper's influence spread quickly, and by 1938 nearly half a million copies were being distributed per week. Many horrible things happened during the Holocaust. Shep Zitler is a Holocaust survivor. In February 1939, Shep was drafted into the Polish army. Jews lived on one side of the street while Poles lived on the other side. The main languages they spoke were Yiddish and Russian. His lieutenant was called Walchek and on his office door there was a sign that said in all capitals “ENTRY IS FORBIDDEN FOR JEWS AND DOGS”. On September 1, 1939, war broke out. When Germany invaded Poland, Poland lost in 16 days. Shep was with the 77th Pulk Piechoty and they were captured and taken to a POW camp around Kielce. Many people died daily due to lack of food. Shep was forced to load coal at the camp called Ludwigsdorf. Minute by minute, Jews were subjected to special treatment. When he went to Goerlitz, he had to clean droppings and urine from the toilets with his bare hands. The Germans always chose Jews to do all the most dangerous and dirtiest jobs they could find. ...... middle of paper ...... a soldier barged in front of the store and ruined the store front with graffiti and trash all over the walls and windows. I remember the door was locked and all the metal blinds were drawn down to try to shield all the windows. When it was there, there was graffiti everywhere with swastikas and writing that said “kauft nicht bei juden,” which meant don’t buy from Jews; they also wrote “die juden sind unser ungluck”, which means that the Jews are our misfortune. These were the two most famous Nazi slogans. The storm troopers were also there to ensure that no one would enter the stores even if the doors were locked. It was mainly about showing strength towards the Jews. These are many of the rights and responsibilities of Jews during the Holocaust. During the Holocaust, approximately 6,000,000 Jews were killed and their memory is still remembered today..
