Zambia's current economic situation is influenced by globalization and foreign donations. The clothes that we send as donations and which we hope to help the unfortunate in our regions and around the world, become a source of commerce and profit in the poorest countries. Up to 95% of clothing donated by the United States is sold to poorer countries. This has created a climate in which other industries fail to thrive in Zambia. Selling second-hand clothes is the only activity that brings in money, which also limits the businesses Zambians can engage in. Former teachers, nurses and civil servants have lost their jobs and are now turning to the second-hand clothing trade to survive. We must first take a look at Zambia's past to understand the current situation. Until the mid-1800s, few people, except Portuguese explorers and traders, had ever set foot on Zambian soil. But from around the 1880s, British business and political leaders began to take an interest in central Africa, and many sought mining rights from local chiefs. During the same period, Northern and Southern Rhodesia (modern Zambia and Zimbabwe) became considered British territory. Southern Rhodesia was formally annexed and granted the right to self-government in 1923. Northern Rhodesia's government was transferred to British colonial offices in 1924. In 1953 it formed a federation with Nyasaland ( Malawi), which caused much internal unrest. as Africans struggled with the white government to gain more independence and involvement in their government.
