    The costumes of the characters were very reminiscent of the personalities of the characters with a modern touch. Lady Capulet is portrayed as a wealthy and extravagant housewife and her costume reiterates this statement. She constantly wore expensive shoes, dresses and jewelry. Romeo wore jeans and a t-shirt to show that he is a relatively "normal" teenager. Juliette wore youthful floral tops, jeans and was barefoot for most of the show, unlike her mother who constantly wore heels, showing her true age. Same with Mercutio. He always wore garish metallic clothing with a rock star haircut and eyeliner. The characters' costumes have been modernized to fit the new time period depicted without compromising the characters' original personality and history. This choice was almost necessary due to the modern American concept of decor; the characters could not have been dressed in 15th century Italian clothing while sitting on a plastic chair. Due to the nature of the play, Romeo and Juliet is an extremely adaptable play and the director took advantage of this. The contemporary American setting made the nearly 500-year-old play accessible and understandable to typical American audiences. Overall, I found the Shakespeare Theater production of Romeo and Juliet to be very good
