  • Essay / School should start later - 847

Beep! Beep! Beep! Aww, it's that time already! I don't want to get up yet! Can I skip my first period? It's the sound you hear in a teenager's bedroom every morning before school. Then they drag their sleepy bodies into the bathroom to get ready for the day. Once showered and ready for the day, they get in their car and drive to school, half asleep. That doesn't seem very safe. Then students go to class and try to learn and remember the things they are taught while their bodies are still trying to rest. When it comes time for exams, students are unable to remember what they were taught when they arrived at school because their bodies were too tired to process what they were learning. When school starts so early in the morning, a teenager's body is not ready to get up and learn something that it will be asked to remember later. “A student’s natural clock is not set for an early, bright start” (Eveleth). What is true, after puberty, teenagers' bodies are "programmed" to stay up later at night and get up later in the morning, making it difficult for them to concentrate in school when they are forced to deal with their body’s “natural constitution of sleeping.” .” Instead, they have to get up early and go to school. U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan said that "studies have shown that students perform better if they start their school day rested and that even though a later start time could be problematic for schedules bus, it's "common sense" that tells him that teenagers have trouble waking up early and going to the buses," he also added that it's not his decision, it is that of each school (Varma-White). Start time is too early for students to excel in school because their bodies are not ready. When teens are forced to stand up...... middle of paper ......d that teens' standardized math and reading test scores increased by two or three percentile points when l “Start time has been moved from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.” (Varma-White). It's no secret that teenagers would benefit from later school start times, and it's also clear that it wouldn't be easy for schools and bus services to simply change their schedules. Although this may be a problem for schools and parents, it is of great interest to students to give them the best opportunity to learn, because after all, it is our future and we want them to be well educated.
