    An example that challenges the previous statement is Benito Mussolini's authoritarian leadership of Italy during World War I. Mussolini made Italy the first fascist country, which transformed the nation into a nationalist authoritarian state. One would assume that under these pretexts there would be an attempt to unify the nation as a whole, both culturally and spiritually. However, Mussolini was intelligent and understood the power of the Roman Catholic Church in Italy. He decided to work with the Church under a simple agreement that basically stated that Mussolini would care about the political aspects and the Church would care about the spiritual aspects. Nonetheless, Mussolini knew it would be difficult to get the Church to accept fascist policies, so he worked to ensure his creation would benefit the faith. For example, Mussolini had his children baptized into Catholicism, closed nightclubs, condemned contraception, and banned divorce throughout Italy so that he could connect the will of Catholicism with the consequences of fascism. There is, however, one aspect of society that the two entities disagree on. The Church and Mussolini wanted to control education.
