Essay / Morality of Animal Experimentation - 1117
Today's society is based on anthropocentrism, a worldview in which humans have priority. Members of other species are used daily for many things today. Animal flesh, eggs and milk are used as means of consumption. Some are used as pets for companionship, for hunting and plowing on farms, and may even be used as entertainment in shows and circuses. Police and residents also use dogs to protect themselves from others and the animals' skin and wool are used to make unnecessary items such as clothes, wallets, purses and shoes. Although using animals for some of these things seems irrational to some, animals are also used for something much more horrific: animal testing. Knowing that animal testing causes suffering, and that we can and should experiment without using members of other species, because what works on animals doesn't work on humans, does that still make it morally justifiable? experimentation on members of other species? Each year, more than 100 million animals are killed in the United States for animal testing. Although this figure seems horrible, the ordeals they must endure which lead to their death are even more excruciating. Tests are carried out on many animals, including mice, rats, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, frogs, dogs, cats, monkeys and fish. A common test is the Draize eye irritation test, which is primarily performed on rabbits. In this test, the rabbit's heads are placed in a device to keep them stabilized, and then a substance such as bleaching shampoo, nail polish, or chemical cleaners is placed in one eye. The author also adds that rabbits "sometimes break their necks in their frantic attempts to escape." The animal is then kept in confinement and studied to measure eye irritation and the effect of the chemical on its species ... middle of paper ... and we shouldn't do experiments on it either . 100 million animals are killed in the United States alone for animal testing. When will humanity put an end to this horrible affair? When will the human race realize it, animals suffer just like us. Experimenting on animals is immoral and there is no doubt about it. They feel pain, just like us. They are hurting, just like us. They deserve moral consideration, just like we do.
