  • Essay / Refugee Interview Essay - 1024

The Story of Mongongos. We learned about the refugees' work ethic, their curiosity, their desire to create a better life for themselves and their families. Many refugees arrive in the United States with next to nothing and work their way up. They come closest to what we call the American Dream because they are willing to work to achieve it. Another challenge many refugees face is that of community, being accepted and integrating. Ms Minela Terzic, from Bosnia and Herzegovina, found it particularly difficult as she was not able to communicate with her secondary school classmates. Minela spoke no English and was often frustrated by not being able to talk to anyone about her feelings and problems. She found friends in her ESL classes, where it didn't matter whether you spoke English well or not, because they were all able to understand each other's situation. Later, when she moved to Charlotte, where there was a larger Bosnian community, she finally felt like she had found a second home. Once she settled in Charlotte and had someone to talk to, she was much happier and the transition became much easier for her.
