  • Essay / Vitamin C By Linus Pauling - 2191

Worked!Introduction:In today's culture, being tan coincides with what we believe to be beautiful. It is therefore not surprising that in the United States of America, approximately 922,000 people are currently living with some level of melanoma. Even though the media and doctors warn people about the risks of excessive sun exposure and provide information on how to prevent skin cancer, people continue to ignore this important information and expose themselves to in the sun for long periods without protection. Linus Pauling was perhaps the first individual to propose the importance of vitamin C as a means to improve health and as a preventative measure for diseases such as cancer. However, the proposal for a high dose of vitamin C has not been received positively, as it is often considered one of the most controversial proposals in 20th century science. Despite the evidence offered by Pauling, many scientists of the time considered this idea too "simplistic"; The proposal for high-dose vitamin C continued to be ignored for most of the 20th century. It was not until Pauling's death that this topic was examined in more depth. Many 21st century discoveries have confirmed Linus Pauling's proposition almost 70 years ago. Not only has vitamin C in high doses been shown to be a very effective preventative measure, but it also has anti-cancer properties. These results intrigued us to further examine the correlation between melanoma and a high dose of vitamin C. Melanoma is a highly metastatic form of cancer that can progress from stage 1 at diagnosis to an almost incurable stage 4 in as well. just a month. In addition, chemotherapy... middle of paper ...... dangerous cytostatic drugs(40). It is important to note that a specific dosage of vitamin C is crucial when combined with cytostatic drugs; while Heaney used concentrations of 0–750 µM, Anja Fromberg applied 1–2 mM vitamin C. Thus, appropriate dosing appears to have a positive effect on the results, while inappropriate dosing can have detrimental cytotoxic effects ( 6). Christian M. Kurbacher helps support this claim with MCF-7 breast cells. When vitamin C was added to the cytostatic drugs cisplatin, doxorubicin, and paclitaxel, the results indicated that the chemotherapeutic drugs are more effective (41). Additionally, because high doses of vitamins are nontoxic, this allows for the use of a wide range of potential chemotherapeutic drugs. Although sensitivity and cytostatic drugs have not yet been tested in melanoma cell lines, the future looks bright for future cytostatic + vitamin C combinations..
