Essay / Realism in The Most Dangerous Game By Richard Connell
Realism is a literary movement emphasizing the depiction of contemporary life and society as it exists or existed. At this time, many authors based their stories on materialism, Darwinism and Marxism. Materialism is the belief that people are separated based on their social status. Darwinism is the belief in “survival of the fittest,” meaning that one species will always outlive another. Marxism is the belief that money and class structure control a nation. In this style of writing, they make the universe unpredictable and make fate determined by chance. Furthermore, the characters' lives are transformed by their environment rather than by their internal conflicts. In "The Most Dangerous Game", Richard Connell uses modernist and realistic writing methods such as dominant mood, naturalism and setting to criticize big game hunting, Darwinism and the Russian Civil War and its effects on people. “The Most Dangerous Game” is based on theories of Darwinism, big game hunting and the Russian Civil War. In the 19th century, Charles Darwin developed the idea of natural selection and survival of the fittest. These ideas represented the natural process by which only organisms best adapted to their environment tend to survive and pass on these genes to their next generations. Those who cannot adapt to their environment will most likely die. Big game hunting was the belief that dangerous species were hunted in South America. In South America, jaguars represented a large catch if killed, as they were "the most powerful and feared carnivore in South America" (Literature and Its Times 232). The Russian Civil War was between the Bolsheviks (the Reds) and their opponents (the Whites). The Whites were made up of a mixture of Cossacks and...... middle of paper ......r. Connell uses the setting to criticize the Russian Civil War. Realism is a literary style in which familiar aspects of life are depicted in a simple or direct manner. Many authors, including Richard Connell, use realistic writing methods, as well as materialism, Darwinism, and Marxism, to criticize the ideas of people of that era. With this type of writing style, the story is fickle, meaning the outcome cannot be predicted as easily as one might think. Connell uses prevailing mood, setting, and naturalism to critique the way people thought in "The Most Dangerous Game." He also uses historical events such as Darwinism, big game hunting, and the Russian Civil War to develop a story reflecting what happened between the years 1845 and 1945. This specific time period allows Connell to write a story making judgments about different points of view. others.
