    The important aspect of this scene is that Smiley is talking about the struggle against apartheid. However, Smiley pronounces it "Besides Hate" due to his speech impediment. There is officially no discrimination in the United States, but apartheid is apparent. Smiley is a racing suit. He is perfect for this role because he represents everyone, not just one. This is also a very deliberate choice for this role, as Smiley is disabled. The lighting in this photo is high-key, very bright, with little to no shadows in the background. In the next scene, you immediately notice a strong backlight with a silhouette of Mookie. The blinds on the window are an intense red, volatile and unpleasant. The blur in the photo indicates that some sort of filter was used. The filter gives the shot a cloudy and mysterious appearance. Discreet lighting is used, very strong light from behind is apparent and there is little or no fill light. The camera is positioned on an extremely long shot and the height of the camera reaches waist-high. This height is used because Mookie is sitting on a bed.
