Essay / The Challenges of Religious Pluralism - 1174
For centuries, religion in America has been more of a family affair. This means that despite the different groupings, almost all major religions have been united under the same American experience. Almost all major religious denominations have had to conform to the precepts of Protestantism. Perhaps it comes from the belief that almost all of these groups were responsible for the formation of America as we know it today. However, many events have happened in recent decades that have changed the way religions behave. A theme that has evolved a lot over the years is that of pluralism. For many years, America has been a haven for different groups of people. British immigration brought a different ideology as they lacked unification in their own religious beliefs. This essay seeks to show how the Roman Catholic Church adapted to the challenge of religious pluralism in the American republic by modifying European notions of religious tradition. Adaptations of traditions within the Roman Catholic Church have allowed them to be relevant within communities. If there is one religious group that has retained its beliefs in a rapidly changing world, it is the Roman Catholic Church. The Catholic Church is perhaps the largest religious denomination in the world. To this day, the Church remains faithful to the teachings it has practiced since the beginning of its creation. With the British colonization of America, most churches abandoned their morals or had to change them somewhat to conform to the English Church's belief in morals. The Catholic Church, in what is called “moral theology,” has continually defended morality in society. This theory is closely related to the nature...... middle of article ......es on the Church's claim to pluralism. Due to the enormous influence of the British, the Catholic Church was forced to modify some of its teachings and beliefs in order to deal with the challenges posed by the British notion of religion. From the question of the conception of children to marriage, we see that many changes are being introduced in the Catholic Church. With the rate at which this practice is growing, we are going to see more changes made in this way if the Church is to remain relevant in the community. However, it is worth noting that only a modification of certain beliefs is observed, and not a complete overhaul of main religious practices. Urbana: University of Illinois Press, 2008. Print.
