Essay / Slavery in the United States - 1279
Throughout our history, our country has done and supported many different things that we are not proud of today. One of those things is slavery. At the time, slavery was a very controversial topic between 1800 and 1860, known as the Antebellum Period. It was quickly realized that two regions of the United States had very different views on slavery, for very different reasons: the North being against and the South being for slavery. It was with this in mind that the South began to develop arguments to defend and legitimize its reasoning that slavery should exist and not be abolished. This article aims to oppose Southerners' defenses of slavery. The South had constructed several different arguments to defend its position on slavery, including the religious defense, the political defense, and the economic argument. Although the South made very compelling arguments regarding the practice of slavery, all three of these arguments can be proven false and dubious by asserting that there is a sense of a moral code in the Bible regarding the treatment of slaves, according to which blacks are not subject to abasement. that whites simply because of their race, and that if slavery were to be abolished, the economy would still thrive as it did in the North. In Religious Defense, the South justified the use of slavery because the Bible consented to its use. of slaves. A proponent of slavery, AT Holmes, asserts, in his article The Duties of Christian Masters, that it was permissible to own slaves provided one treated the slave as a friend – with "good will, kindness and a desire for well-being.” -be of him" (Holmes 103), or even more like a generous father, guiding his naive slaves towards Christian behavior...... middle of paper ......omics Irrelevant argument, because economics would still be able to prosper without the use of slavery, just as was the case in the North. It is evident that the South attempted to present very convincing arguments in order to defend its pro-slavery arguments, some being religious defense, political defense, and political defense. the economic argument. However, each of these arguments is flawed and may be found to be dubious and unpersuasive by Northern anti-slavery arguments. Clearly, the two regions had very different beliefs on whether or not slavery should be abolished, and it is obvious that neither side of the debate would change their position. Although it was only one of several different issues, the issue of slavery was undoubtedly one of the causes of the Civil War, as both sides were both very firm on their beliefs and none were ready to move..
