Footsteps of a Good ManLena Younger (Mama) had made a deposit on a new house, the movers were on the way, and the packing of Mom's dishes had begun when the terrible news arrived. Although the house had a down payment, Walter lost $6,500 and the family was devastated. “One of you better call the movers and tell them not to come,” said Mama (1892). As soon as Walter enters the house and explains his horrible plan, she bursts into tears. Walter, a young black American man, believes that a person can achieve all the dreams of his head and heart through money. The name Walter means leader of the army, strong fighter, conqueror. In the play Raisin in the Sun, written by Lorraine Hansberry, Walter fails to live up to the meaning of his name as he attempts to become head of the household. Walter wants to provide material comforts that will make his family happier. In his mind, he thinks that having money will make him powerful. Money will make him a man in the eyes of his family. Walter knows that money can buy his mother a house, put pearls around his wife's neck, send his sister to school, and give his son a good life. However, Walter does not realize that he is not using common sense, that his actions will break his mom's heart, or the shame he will bring to his family by acting in a spirit of psychological slavery.
