  • Essay / The Wire and Law and Order Paper 2 Prompt - 803

I imagine there are hundreds of shows that feature crime, and more specifically urban crime. Two examples are Law and Order, which takes place in New York, and The Wire, which takes place in Baltimore. Although both shows depict crimes taking place in an urban area, both incorporate court scenes and music; they do it to make two different points: for the audience to learn about a single crime and the other to show life in Baltimore. Each show accomplished this with a similar goal and style. They both have a different vision of the definitive goal of each individual show. It is important to recognize the commonalities that appear in each show. The ultimate goal of Law and Order and The Wire is to demonstrate urban crime and the investigation carried out to solve the various crimes. In the episodes, the main crime was murder, although murder was often not the only crime under investigation. Without a crime and an investigation, these two shows would have no basis. Each show aims for similar styles. They feature the basic style of a detective show by incorporating court scenes and music. The aim of the legal scene is to illustrate the reality of the spectacle. The court scenes in both shows are interactive and eventually lead to a conviction or not guilty charge. Each show then displays an importance to the use of music. The most significant music is heard at the very beginning of the episode and at the end of the episode. Each musical piece is chosen to add to the interpretation that the writer wants the audience to leave the episode with. While these few similarities occur in both shows, each show diverges in many ways. Law and order has one essential purpose; present a single cry...... middle of paper......iplus, but hear it too. To truly experience something, you have to see and hear it. It's important that these aspects of the series and episode are acknowledged so that the true purpose of The Wire can hopefully be successfully transferred from the creators to the audience. Each show depicts urban crime and investigation, but each show has its own way of going about it. of which he attacks these two aspects. Law and Order wants the audience to have an obvious criminal to name and uses external music to do so. Whereas The Wire wants the audience to experience Baltimore, and to achieve that it needs to feature different crimes and use the internal music to add even more to the experience. It's important that shows start with similar goals and styles and then go their own way until the end, because if they were all the same no one would want to watch them..
