James Cameron's Avatar has been hailed by film critics as one of the greatest and most impactful films of all time . A Detroit Times critic said in his review of the film: "I have seen the future of cinema, and it is Avatar (rottentomatoes.com). » Critics and audiences alike were captivated by the fast-paced, intense sci-fi film released over the Thanksgiving holiday of 2009. Many marveled at the immense amount of detail, dedication and creativity it took to produce the film: “A lot of money, a big risk, a pretty big reward. This has been his constant tendency, and it is high time to give credit where credit is due: James Cameron keeps his promises (rottentomatoes.com).” Others were impressed by the technology used to make such an epic film: "Watching it, I began to understand how people in 1933 must have felt seeing King Kong (rottentomatoes.com). » However, while Cameron's use of new technology was overwhelming, its message at the heart of the film was not lost. By combining stunning special effects and romantic principles, Cameron was able to speak out against imperialism, corporations and environmental issues. The first principle used in Avatar is the green world. Of all the principles used in the film, the green world is the one on which all other principles are based. The green world is also important in romantic literature. Romantic writers presented nature as holy, the true religion. Avatar is no exception. Pandora is the planet used as a setting for the film. The environment of Pandora is breathtaking. The forest is lush and tropical, mimicking the coral reefs that Cameron studied to build his fictional paradise( ). Whether Cameron succeeded in initiating a permanent change in environmental ideals is anyone's guess, but he succeeded in making a film that will never be forgotten.
