Essay / Literary review in William Blake's Return To The...
The dystopian future described featured a spy state that also exploited its workers (a common theme of Marxism). This exaggerated version of capitalism divided the population into three classes. The inner circle, the outer circle and the proletarians. The inner circle consisted of bourgeois, the outer circle and proletarians more closely resembled the labor force and the impressionable (if not ignorant) malleable population (although the two together constituted the proletarian class), respectively. In the book, Marx's supposed demise of capitalism is discussed. “If there is hope,” Winston wrote, “it lies in the proletarians” (Orwell, 1949). This is an allusion to the work of Marx, who said that the only way to end capitalism was for the proletariats to unite and abandon their forces.
