  • Essay / Reflecting on Clinical Practice - 803

This reflective essay will discuss three skills that I learned and developed during my internship. The three skills I will discuss in this essay are bed bathing, observing a corpse being prepared for the morgue, and inserting a cannula and removing it. These skills will be discussed in this essay using the model (Gibb's, 1988). I chose to use the Gibb model because I find this model easier to use and understand to guide me in my thought process. Additionally, this model will be helpful in breaking down the new skills I have developed in a way I can understand. This model will also allow me to transform my experiences into knowledge that I can refer to in the future when faced with the same or similar situations. The Gibbs model looks simple compared to the other model, that's why I chose it too. To comply with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of Conduct, the names of real patients in this trial have been changed to respect confidentiality. DescriptionDuring the second week of my internship, I was asked to give an 85-year-old man a bed bath. old patient in my bay, in the ward and prepare him for breakfast. This patient had bowel surgery and as a result was wearing an ostomy bag. This patient was diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) IN 2010, but his condition worsened over the years. IBD mainly refers to ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD). However, this patient suffered from Crohn's disease. My mentor asked me to bathe him in bed while she observed me because she had taught me how to help patients with their activities of daily living (ADLs) which are considered important. ADLs are called the daily needs that individuals normally meet daily, for example, bathing...... middle of paper ... to care for the patient. While my patient was in bed, I used my interpersonal, listening and communication skills. This helped me when talking and giving instructions to my patient. I discovered the importance of communication in nursing between the nurse and the patient in order to understand each other, for example by asking for a patient's consent. Additionally, it is during bed bathing that the nurse and patient can form a therapeutic relationship leading the patient to trust the nurse. While my patient was in bed, I also checked the skin for example bruises and bedsores. Since communication and listening skills are essential in nursing, so I will need to improve my skills so that I can become a better nurse in the future. Also, next time I should not let my feelings get in the way when I approach a situation similar or the same as this in the future..
