  • Essay / How I Met My Husband by Alex Munro - 664

I remember reading all kinds of short stories when I was younger, learning the different lessons from the stories. The lesson of the story is essentially the theme. The author uses a combination of literary elements to convey the theme. In the story “How I Met My Husband,” by Alice Munro, the theme was a little difficult to understand. After re-reading, decoding and researching the story, I came to the conclusion that the theme was the hope of true love. I will explain how Munro uses plot, point of view, and symbolism to describe the theme of the story. The plot of a story describes a series of events that lead to a climax, and ultimately the downfall of a situation. In “How I Met My Husband,” the plot starts off quite slowly and picks up speed toward the middle. At the beginning, we learn that Edie, the protagonist, is an employee of the Peebles family. She takes care of the children, cleans the house and cooks for the family. One day, after dressing in Mrs. Peebles' clothes, she comes downstairs and sees a man, Chris, outside the window. This is when all the action starts to happen. They have a little chat and Chris leaves to get his water. Edie is afraid that Chris will innocently tell the family that she is dressed, so she goes to talk to him. This is where the audience gets their first glimpse of what we believe to be the beginning of true love. It seems Chris wants Edie to stay and talk to him more, but she has to go watch the kids. Then Edie finds out that Chris has a fiancé, which is a surprise. When Mrs. Peebles and Alice, Chris's fiancée, go on a picnic, Edie goes to tell Chris about the picnic. Edie sits on the edge of Chris's bed and he starts kissing her with "...... middle of paper...... it happened. Edie finds out "there was women who were waiting and waiting for a letter by the mailboxes” and she no longer wants to be that woman (Clugston, 2010) The hope of love that Edie was waiting for finally came, but not in the form of. a letter. It's from the postman It's ironic how the postman, the guy who was supposed to deliver the love letter, became the love that Edie was hoping for. great example of how you never know when true love is going to happen. Edie thought it would come from one person, but in reality, that person prepared her to find love. If she hadn't gone to the mailbox and waited for the mail every day, she would never have found what she wanted. Getting to the topic of love wasn't easy, but looking at it. The plot, point of view and symbolism of the story, everything became clear..
