Information is shared online whenever users browse the Internet. This information is disclosed from visited sites and is used by companies to better target customers. Sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Google Plus are capable of tracking browsing activities, not only within the site, but beyond these boundaries. From every Facebook page to Twitter's tweet button, personal information is made available to others. This article will explore the technical and ethical considerations related to personal information shared across the web to target customers based on their preferences. This paper also covers issues and concerns related to data mining and online consumer privacy. I will explain how personal information is obtained and for what purposes it is used. I will also discuss ways we can control how our information is processed and how to keep information out of the hands of others.
