  • Essay / The pros and cons of medicine and medical technology

Hello, I am Professor Emi, co-director of the Human Brain Project. I will share with you my goal, the different perspectives of medicine and medical technology as well as the stages of creating medicine. Including this, I will also share with you my work objective for the project I am currently working on. Medicines and medical technology always have two distinct sections that describe each other. It is divided into advantages and disadvantages. Over time, scientists research to improve medicine and medical technology to increase benefits. However, no matter how advanced medicine and medical technology are, they still have both positive and negative impacts. Most of the time, there is a case where something new can also have another type of negative impact. X-rays are an example of medical technology that has both positive and negative effects on patients. Before the invention of X-rays, doctors had to be extra careful. To check if there was anything abnormal in the body, they had to cut into the body and look inside. Nowadays there are X-rays. Doctors have less need to cut the body. On the other hand, there is a new negative impact: radiation. This can cause cancer and many other diseases and damages. What never changes is the fact that new technologies often have both positive and negative impacts. Another negative effect currently occurring is the number of people experiencing adverse reactions to prescribed medications, which stands at 2.2 million per year. The number of unnecessary antibiotics prescribed each year for viral infections is 20 million per year. The number of patients undergoing unnecessary medical and surgical procedures is 7.5 million per year. The number of people exposed to unnecessary hospitalization each year is 8.9 million per year... paper computers that are 1,000 times more powerful than today. Our goal is to create a realistic simulation of the brain. This tool will be used to understand how the mind works, to study brain diseases and to invent new electronic devices. To achieve this objective, more than 80 European institutions have joined our project. This is a big challenge for us because we hope it will have a huge impact on patient health. Scientists will continue their research to gain more knowledge to create better medicines, procedures, ideas and inventions that improve our lives and the world. I hope you have understood the importance of medicine, medical technology and the people who helped create them in creating a better world today. Remember that our use of science, technology and the environment will continue to evolve and all of this will impact how the world works..
