Essay / Differences and inequalities visible on...
By comparing two British streets located in different localities, we can assess the differences and inequalities in the social, economic and cultural spheres. This essay will focus on the differences and inequalities that exist between Renshaw St, Liverpool and City Rd, Wales, looking at road traffic, homelessness and economic activity at street level. Renshaw Street runs perpendicular to the Liverpool City Center side and Liverpool Lime Street. is one block away, as is the Adelphi Hotel. The road is full of pubs, bars, taxi ranks, clothing stores, music stores, restaurants and also takeaways. While City Road contains takeaways, a restaurant, a town pub and a few nightclubs. Liverpool's older generation relaxes in quiet pubs, in particular there is an Irish pub where most of the clientele are Irish. However, the student population frequents the cafes/libraries on this street during the day, as well as the university library which is located in the area, during the day and at night they frequent the nightclubs aimed at the younger population. However, in City Road the older population attends a municipal club. There is a large immigrant population in City Road – the population is large enough that the largest Sari store in North Wales is based there. The store is a family business, where the women in the family run the business, which is a departure from traditional Asian family values. There does not appear to be a large immigrant population in Renshaw Street, the largest minority of immigrants are Irish; one of the Irish owns a pub where the Irish community gathers. On Renshaw Street there are a large amount of takeaways, pubs, bars, taxi ranks etc. In the past these were old stores but due to consumer demand they...... middle of paper...... locals now call it the death crossroads due to of the large number of accidents which have taken place there. In conclusion, there are several key similarities between the two streets, such as the connected lives people lead that push our consumer society to new heights every year, and thus our service sectors will continue to grow and attract different people, who may feel like they have a choice about which stores they go to; in fact, this is not the case, because people are manipulated by brand management. However, due to the social nature of each city, the services offered will be slightly different, as businesses attempt to generate net profits and generally rely on people passing through an area who would normally be there, e.g. opposed to people traveling a large number of kilometers. visit a store; an example of this being the immigrant specific services on each street.
