Bullying was a thing of the past, when lunch money was taken and students were verbally aggressive towards students who displayed shy characteristics. The latest means of communication is through social media, creating a more aggressive and invisible means for bullies to attack innocent people. Social media has honestly created an open invitation for harassment. “Social media is a collection of online communication channels dedicated to community contribution, interaction, content sharing, and collaboration” (WhatIs.com). It's how people communicate with their friends, family, colleagues and classmates. Special events such as birthdays, holidays and holidays are announced and sent on social media as a group message. Friends and family members can stay in touch 24 hours a day. Social media provides a unique way to connect with people around the world. Children are more likely to become bullies or be bullied. They also “do not seem to have adequate social skills that will help them form friendships in a positive way” (Carducci 229). They have low self-esteem and are insecure about themselves. The majority of bullies “alter their own identity so that the target does not know who is upsetting them” (Carducci 237). It's a way of keeping their identity hidden. There are no repercussions that a bully will face if they remain anonymous and hide behind their cruel words. Boundaries are crossed “through social media, including name-calling, teasing, threats, and the spread of rumors” (Rowell 18). Secrets shared in complete confidentiality are broadcast on social networks. When friendships fade, people take to social media to broadcast their best friend's dirty talk.
