Their names were Jerry Baldwin, Zev Siegl and Gordon Bowker. With over “20,100 locations worldwide and 11,500 locations across the United States,” it is no surprise that the company is doing so well (Huffington Post, 2014). Additionally, according to Fortune's 100 Best Companies to Work For, Starbucks was ranked 94th out of 100, up from 73rd (Starbucks, 2013). Being a big supporter of Starbucks, this seemed like the perfect company to research. This article will discuss five major topics regarding Starbucks' motivational principles, the importance of business ethics, how diversity is implemented in the company, new innovations that will soon be implemented and the SWOT analysis of Starbucks. Starbucks Motivation PrinciplesMotivation is important when it comes to having and producing effective employees. The two main theories used by Starbucks to motivate employees are: ERG theory and equity theory. It was interesting to see that one method of motivating employees was based on the ERG theory developed by Clayton Alderfer. ERG theory “assumes that three basic needs influence behavior: existence, relatedness, and growth” (Kinicki and Williams, 2011). It is important to pay attention to growth needs in order to motivate employees to work effectively (Cada, 2012). With the evolution of technology over the years, it is not surprising that Starbucks offers such an application to pay with a prepaid Starbucks card from a smartphone (Robertson, 2014). In this article, five major topics were covered, including: the motivational principles displayed by Starbucks, the importance of business ethics, how diversity is implemented throughout the company and the new innovations implemented. All of these topics are important when trying to run a successful business.
