What is a dropout? There are many definitions and ways to use this word but for this occasion I will talk about high school dropouts. A high school dropout is a student who stops studying for many reasons. As much as we would like to believe that students are 150% focused on their education, there are many other things that overwhelm students on a daily basis. Things such as low family income and help to support their family to live decently, pregnancy, discrimination, lack of parental support and/or lack of interest in education. High school is the start of a new chapter for every student. This is the start of a good transition for young adults. Completing high school is not only a great achievement, but also a stepping stone to higher education and career opportunities. It is through hard work that students make it to the end and, hopefully, can continue their higher education. Many students get through it easily, but many struggle during the process and decide or are even forced to drop out. But why do students lose interest in school? It may be that when students notice that they are not succeeding, they lose their drive and motivation and prefer to do something else with their lives that they find productive. Without success, students are no longer encouraged to go to school. They therefore have no attachment to their school. Personal problems affecting students appear to be the main cause of school dropouts. Pregnancy is a major factor affecting female students. As noted, "Lack of parental and educational support and becoming a parent are two of the most common reasons young Americans drop out of high school, according to data collected in the middle of an article...... have family and students there. This course gave me the insight and knowledge to know that English language learners are truly valuable to our classrooms and that they may become discouraged because they feel discriminated against or not accepted. Through our classmates' stories, I learned that my role as a teacher is very important to these students and that I must work hard to integrate them into my classroom and give them the tools to succeed in their education. As my classmates mentioned in our discussions, this can be very frustrating and often discouraging. Steps can be taken to prevent school dropouts, and we, as future educators, are part of the solutions. This problem may be chronic and has lasted for many years, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't act and feel entitled to want to make a difference...
