TV or no TVIt's a question that millions of parents across America are pondering. Violence, as well as sexual content, on television is at an unprecedented level. The notes too. The sex and violence seems to appeal to a wider audience. A larger audience brings more money to the networks. This all seems simple enough, except for the fact that not all viewers are old enough to know fact from fiction or right from wrong. With the increase in violence in schools, the question arises: do violent television programs influence our children and their actions? According to some psychological research, television violence negatively affects children. The three main effects of television violence are: Children may become less sensitive to the pain and suffering of others. Children may be more afraid of the world around them. Children may be more likely to behave aggressively towards others. .Sometimes children act differently after watching violent programs on television. In a study done at Pennsylvania State University, approximately 100 preschool children were observed before and after watching television. Some children watched cartoons that featured many aggressive and violent acts, while others watched shows that did not feature any kind of violence. Researchers found many real differences in behavior between children who watched violent shows and those who watched nonviolent shows. Children who watched violent shows were more likely to pick on their playmates, argue, disobey authority, and were less willing to wait than children who watched nonviolent shows. Some studies have found that children who watched many hours of violent television when they were in elementary school were more likely to exhibit higher levels of aggressive behavior as they grew older. One of these studies observed these same young people until the age of 30. The results showed that those who had watched a lot of television at the age of eight were significantly more likely to be arrested and prosecuted for criminal acts as adults.
