  • Essay / Differences between Islam and Buddhism - 840

When deciding which topic to cover in three different religions, I wanted to learn more about one thing, God. In addition to Christianity, the other two religions that I will compare and contrast are Islam and Buddhism. The similarities between Islam and Christian teaching are numerous but the differences are major. Buddhist teachings offer the greatest distinction between the other two and it will be interesting to compare them. In Christianity, God is an eternal being. He created the universe and everything in it. It is both transcendent and immanent. One of the most important views of God is the Trinity. The most popular way of explaining this doctrine is "one God in three persons." These three people are God, the Son (Jesus) and the Holy Spirit. They are all distinct but the same. The Bible describes different attributes that define what the Christian God is like. First, he is omniscient. He knows everything and his knowledge is complete. Second, he is omnipotent, or capable of achieving whatever he chooses. It is also omnipresent or present in all places and at all times. It is immutable, possessing the same attributes before and after creation. God is holy. He cannot accept or consider sin. Because of his holiness he is righteous. God is sovereign over all creation. This sets him free to do what he knows is best for his people. God is love. God is merciful. He pours out grace on his people. Some believe that the God of Islam (Allah) is the same God of Christianity. They have some of the same characteristics but are distinct. Allah is an all-powerful and all-knowing creator, sustainer, orderer and judge of the universe. Unlike the God of Christianity, Allah is singular. There is no one in the middle of the paper… certainly not a member. Nor do a personal god or gods seem to be an important part of the religion. Both Islam and Christianity thrive on the knowledge that there is one God who created all of man for the purpose of praising Him. Buddhism only cares about the end of suffering. They only see an end through human means. Christianity sees an end through Jesus and Islam only through God. As I research it, it makes me grateful to be a Christian. I love knowing that God is interested in my life and that I am never alone. This also shows me how much He cares and loves His creation through Him sending Jesus to die for our sins. Islam is a more rules-based religion, and while the laws are important, they can become overwhelming. Buddhism has a dark meaning: the only way to truly improve yourself is through yourself. Humans have fallen and it is impossible to do so completely.
