Essay / Julius Caesar: Who is the best tragic hero, Caesar...
The Search for the Perfect HeroIn today's world, people consider a hero to be someone like Superman or Spider-Man. In the dictionary, a hero is considered or defined as a person of distinguished courage or ability, admired for courageous deeds and noble qualities. Even if we think a hero is free from mistakes, they all have tragic flaws, just like everyone else. A tragic flaw is explained by Aristotle's definition, which says: a tragic hero as a character of great reputation and prosperity whose misfortune is not due to depravity or vice, because the hero is a man or a virtuous woman but with an error of judgment resulting from a tragic flaw. Sometimes this defect is an excess of virtue. In The Tragedy of Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, people argue over who is the perfect tragic hero, Julius Caesar or Marcus Brutus. They both meet the criteria for a tragic hero, but Marcus Brutus proves to be the better and more suited of the two. Prosperity is described as what makes people successful and what earns them their reputation. Both Caesar and Brutus enjoy great prosperity. Caesar earned his by being such a great general and leader. “Is this a victory on the blood of Pompey?” (II51). When Marullus explains that the commoners are rejoicing at Pompey's defeat by Caesar and he is angry that the commoners were in the streets praising Caesar right after he defeated him. Caesar enjoys great prosperity because he has just shown his power and what he can do to the people who oppose him, as he did with Pompey. Brutus also has great prosperity like Caesar. “And look, lay him in the praetor’s chair, where Brutus can only find him” (I.iii.143-144). When Cassius tells Cinna to put the letters in the "praetor's chair" which is a judge... in the middle of a paper...... it's about him. Additionally, the final eulogy was given to Brutus and not Caesar, implying that Brutus is the hero because the final eulogy is usually reserved for the tragic hero at the end of the play. As you can see, people are very excited about who the tragic hero is. the tragic hero Julius Caesar by Marcus Brutus. They both meet the criteria of a tragic hero which is: a tragic hero as a character of great reputation and prosperity whose misfortune is not due to depravity or vice, because the hero is a virtuous man or woman but to an error of judgment resulting from a tragic flaw, but Brutus continues to be the superior of the two. Many people argue about who is the better hero: Caesar or Brutus. My opinion is that Marcus Brutus wins hands down, scion of a rich family, a strong and well developed character, with the ability to persuade others, these qualities make him my favorite tragic hero..
