Essay / Catherine Barkley: Code Hero - 770
A Hemingway Code Hero is a character in an Ernest Hemingway novel who follows a particular pattern of how he goes about his daily life. Catherine Barkley from A Farewell to Arms lives by honor and courage as a Code Hero should. Catherine Barkley is the original coded hero of the novel. She has all the traits of a hero and implements them on Frederick as he grows throughout the story. Catherine's three main traits that define her as a heroine of the Hemingway code are her values of human relations rather than materialism, her idealism and her grace under pressure; she is afraid but not afraid of dying. The first and most obvious trait of Catherine's heroism is that she values human relationships above materialism. Nothing is more important to Catherine than her lover, Henry, and, as the novel progresses, her baby. When Henry is injured and sent to Milan, she has no difficulty in being transferred to the new hospital. Catherine loves Henry and would drop everything to be with him. Nothing material prevents her from being with him. Even when they live in Switzerland, they do not have many material possessions. They live a very simple life because all the couple really needs is each other. In chapter forty, Henry describes their time together with this quote: "When there was a good day, we had a splendid time and we never had a bad time." We knew the baby was very close now and it made us both feel like something was pressing on us and we couldn't waste time together. » Catherine obviously enjoys her time with Henry more than anyone, but it's not the physical aspect of going out and doing things that satisfies her. What satisfies Catherine is the extra time she spends with the love of her life middle of paper...other section of the novel. She repeatedly expresses that she is not afraid of dying to Henry, even in the face of a stillborn baby and multiple hemorrhages. She knows she has to be strong for him. She faces death and, although it is not a pleasant thing, she is not afraid. She's afraid of the unknown and she's afraid of leaving Henry and everything she loves, but she's not afraid of leaving Earth. Even though Frederic Henry may be the main subject of the novel, we cannot forget that Catherine Barkley is the original Hemingway Code Hero who helped Henry become the hero he is at the end of the novel. Without Catherine's heroism, Frédéric Henry would still be an immature paramedic who frequents brothels without much meaning for his life. Catherine forces him to grow up and face the world, and that's why she deserves her title of Hemingway Code Hero..
