“The white man had indeed brought a mad religion…” (153) Okonkwo thought in Things Falling Apart by Chinua Achebe. In the novel, the main character Okonkwo and his son Nwoye experience sudden changes in their village following the arrival of white men. They began their lives in their native Igbo village of Umoufia. After Okonkwo commits an accidental murder, he is forced into exile in Mbanta for seven years. During the years of his exile, Okonkwo heard of white missionaries appearing in Umuofia, who then came to Mbanta. Missionaries promoted Christianity in both villages and some villagers even converted from Ibo culture to Christianity. Finally, after seven years, Okonkwo and Nwoye return to the new Umuofia, where little Ibo culture remains. Okonkwo and Nwoye react differently to the change of village. They have different perceptions about the influence of white men because they have had distinct life experiences that have shaped their own outlook on life.
