Essay / Policy to address human rights violations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo Humans Rights Watch Representative Issue: The failure of the Congolese justice system to adequately prosecute and hold accountable those who committed genocide, extreme and barbaric violations of human rights. Human trafficking, rape, torture, arbitrary detention of innocent civilians and massacres are just some of the atrocities that have been and continue to be committed by soldiers of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and others rebel activists (HRG.org, p.1). It is time for the DRC government to put an end to these human rights violations that it allowed to occur for two decades during the two wars (1997 and 2003) and which are currently occurring, even in a lesser extent.Recommendation: Our recommendation is that the United Nations Security Council assist the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo to vigorously pursue the arrest of those accused of committing ongoing human rights violations, as well as individuals who committed such violations during the war years. The Democratic Republic of Congo must be prepared to accept assistance from the United Nations Security Council as well as the International Criminal Court to help them bring to justice those who have committed human rights violations. To achieve this, we recommend the following: 1) Thorough reform of the judicial system in the Democratic Republic of Congo. 2) Prosecuting and holding to account those responsible for human rights atrocities will be the only way the country will begin to move towards a stable and functioning society. 3) Providing monetary assistance to improve the security forces in order to provide...... middle of paper ......
