  • Essay / Master History Teachers: Confucius, Socrates, and Jesus

Socrates was a classical Greek philosopher who questioned everything in his quest for truth. Socrates once said: “The only true wisdom is to know that you know nothing” (“Socrates Quotes”). This teaching of Socrates helps inform people that it is wise to know that there are questions that will never be discovered. This is so powerful to me because it addresses an issue I am dealing with regarding my faith. As I said before, I have many unanswered questions that I wish were answered, but one of the key elements of any religion is questions. Socrates appreciated the fact that he did not always know what to do, and he expressed that "our prayers should be for blessings in general, for God knows best what is good for us" ("Socrates Quotes"). God has a way of keeping His children from truly knowing everything about the world around us and our existence as a whole. It is evident that Socrates was at peace, knowing that he had no real control over his life, and he readily believed that God knew what would be best in the end. God keeps us in darkness to protect us from evil in the world and to help us strengthen our faith. Socrates saw this constant uncertainty and made it his duty to fully accept that humans will never have all the knowledge in the world.
