Essay / The Great Gatsby Character Analysis - 1410
Gatsby, who started from nothing and worked his way up to his wealth, did everything according to Daisy's opinion. He knew Daisy loved a specific, flashy lifestyle, which is exactly why he started throwing outrageously extravagant parties, in the hopes that she would stumble upon it one day. Gatsby's decisions were all influenced by the love of his life, Daisy. By changing his name and the way he speaks, Gatsby ensured that the next time he crossed paths with Daisy, it would be a bond just as strong as the first. He even built his mansion right across the bay, facing the direction where she lives. The hearts of the audience everywhere are pulled and melted by the way Gatsby showed his affection for Daisy. Even Nick became aware of Gatsby's obsession, stating: "He [Gatsby] talked a lot about the past, and I understood that he wanted to rediscover something, an idea of himself perhaps, which had led him to love Daisy. Since then his life had been confusing and disordered, but if he could one day return to a certain starting point and work through it all slowly, he might find out what this thing was…” (110). The will of a man, who will do everything possible to try to recreate what once was, touches the heart of almost every girl. When the audience realizes that Daisy didn't choose Gatsby, hearts begin to break. This catharsis that the public begins to feel is that of Aristotle.
