  • Essay / PROTECTION AGAINST FALLS AND HAZARDS - 783

Risk and protection against fallsFalls are a problem that usually occurs in a professional environment. Companies spend a lot of resources and money to protect their employees from injury. There are several reasons why there is a risk of falling (Hughes and Ferrett, 2013). Fall-related accidents pose a great challenge to construction as the threats they pose pose a great challenge to the construction field due to the fatalities they usually result in most of the time. Some of the most common fall accidents associated with the construction industry can be described as follows: site falls during construction, accidents involving cranes, equipment crushing on workers, accidents due to electrical faults, trench collapse during construction and certain risks resulting from errors. during welding causing engineers to fall. According to fall accident statistics, more than 1,000 workers risk death on construction sites each year as part of their work, and more than 300 of these accidents are related to falls on construction sites. The result of these falls is of course devastating as most victims die and the injuries inflicted affect the construction process. The most obvious result of these cases is a slowdown in the construction process, for example, it financially harms the construction process (Hughes & Ferrett, 2013). Fall-related deaths on site include all incidents ranging from falls on site during the construction process, to falls. resulting from roofing accidents, if cranes fall on the construction site, malfunction of the elevator shaft, falls in the form of scaffolding, falls into pits which are on construction sites, collisions with objects falling from above to...... middle of paper ....... Equipment such as personal fall arrest systems (PFAS) are intended to protect a worker by attaching to an anchor in case he would slip. Fall prevention equipment should be inspected regularly for rectification in case it is out of order. Third, workers should receive training on the best use of equipment on construction sites as well as fall prevention equipment. In fact, a large percentage of fall accidents would never occur if all workers actually knew how to use the equipment in the best possible way. Construction managers and employers should provide training opportunities on how to safely use construction equipment for their own safety. Workers should receive training on hazard recognition and safe use of equipment primarily associated with falls, such as ladders, scaffolding as well as construction sites, through this program.
