  • Essay / A deeper look at the history of Apple iOS. - 1160

Over the years, mobile phones evolved from the bulky Motorola DyanaTac 8000x that was 13 inches long, weighed 2.5 pounds, and featured a single app, a contact list. Today we have a number of different phones. From touchscreen to gesture capabilities and phones with microphones enabling voice input that results in immediate action as well as the ability to directly manipulate content. In this article, I'll explore the growth of mobile apps and dig deeper into one of the most popular platforms on the market today, Apple's iOS. A Brief History of the Mobile Phone First generation mobile phones were designed and developed by phone manufacturers. Because of the amount of competition, trade secrets were very closely guarded and, unless you were an inner circle developer, you weren't able to write apps for the phone. It was around this time that the first “time-wasting” games became available on these phones. Nokia became famous for installing the 1970 game Snake on its first devices. These first telephones changed the way people communicated. As popularity increased and prices of phones fell, people demanded more from their mobile gadgets/devices. Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) was developed to meet these demands. WAP was essentially a lightweight version of HTTP, which is the basic protocol of the World Wide Web. However, WAP fell short, becoming frustrating for users because it was slow and difficult to read on small, low-resolution screens. Users wanted to get the most out of their devices and WAP didn't meet those needs. That's when traditional desktop app developers got involved. Phone makers realized if they want to keep selling and be in the middle of paper...... Apple is infinite. Works Cited "Apple - iOS 7 - Features". Apple - iOS 7 - Features. Apple. March 12, 2014.
