  • Essay / Self-Determination Theory - 735

Finally, people need to form close personal relationships in their lives in order to feel like they belong somewhere. If none of these three needs are met, a person will not be able to feel fulfilled in their life. There are also three types of autonomous behavior discovered by Deci, Ryan, and Guay: intrinsically motivated behavior, extrinsically motivated behavior, and emotion-motivated behavior. When people are intrinsically motivated, they engage in activities because it's something they enjoy doing and it makes them happy, not anyone else. When individuals begin doing things solely because there is a consequence or reward aside from their own satisfaction, then those individuals are externally motivated. If any of the three needs for autonomy, relatedness, or competence have not been able to be satisfied for too long, the person may begin to withdraw their desire for satisfaction. However, if the need has not been met for a short period of time, people will be more motivated to restore and satisfy the need that has not been met.
