Essay / The Beginnings of Immigration to America - 1215
Without the help of immigrant influences, the United States would be a single-culture country. Immigrants have shaped the way we [the United States] are today in society. Different ethnicities brought different sports, foods, religions, jobs, education, and cultures when they immigrated. Upon arrival, many Americans did not approve of the new wave of immigrants who were virtually overrunning their country; therefore, the authorities imposed many laws and restrictions that immigrants had to face when immigrating to America. Immigrants arriving in the United States paved an easier path for many citizens in the 1900s. Culture defines everyone's journey. While living in the United States as immigrants, trying to preserve the culture and keep it with them during the trip and stay was their main goal. Culture can range from language to how a community spends its day. The introduction of different cultures to America made it very diverse, in which many ethnic groups spoke their own languages and led their lives as they did in their former countries. Each group's culture contributed in some way during the 1900s, such as the holidays celebrated and the religion they believed in. As the culture spread across the United States, jobs were also created. Immigrants found any job they could do for money. They earned almost twelve dollars a week for dirty and dangerous work. These dirty and dangerous jobs created many of the things we [the United States] see today. Without their willingness to work, these bridges, railway tunnels or even the cables for street lighting on Broadway might not exist now ("IMMIGRANTS IN 1900's NEW YORK CITY - Jobs"). The contribution of men and women in accomplishing these difficult tasks has helped many Americans in their lives... middle of paper ...... they have devoted most of their time to business and deserve where they are today. Many of their foods, sports, and religions figure prominently in American popularity. Most Americans don't realize it, but America wouldn't be where it is without the help of immigrants.
