  • Essay / Overuse of Antidepressants Today and How Aldous Huxley...

Antidepressants are a prescription medication now used by people of all ages. They are now part of society and therefore taking antidepressants is not frowned upon. Antidepressants are used to make people “happier,” not to feel sad. This is demonstrated in dystopian society in the book Brave New World written by Aldous Huxley in 1932. In this society, people use soma, a well-known drug, to feel no pain and are conditioned to think that soma cures All. Helmholtz and Bernard, two main characters, don't take it because they want to be able to see the world as it is. They also don't want the soma to change how they feel; they want to appreciate nature. Also, Lenina and Henry love taking soma because they don't feel any pain, they are just happy all the time. In our society, people think that antidepressants will not cause any pain and that these medications will solve all their problems. Antidepressants have a negative impact on society today, as well as in the book Brave New World. The use of antidepressants has increased around the world and is used across all ages. Doctors prescribe more medications, even if the patient does not need them. “Antidepressant prescriptions in the UK increased by 9.6% in 2011, to 46 million prescriptions” (Are Antidepressants Overused?). This study took place in the United Kingdom; however, more and more prescriptions are being prescribed around the world. The use of antidepressants is at an all-time high because doctors don't want to waste time talking about their feelings. The psychologist just wants patients to feel better quickly and therefore prescribes them antidepressants. Human beings as well as doctors believe that prescribing medicine changes a person's identity and should not be prescribed. Works Cited “Are antidepressants overused? Daily Science.
