In 1692, the devil was believed to be in colonial Massachusetts. The illogical people of Salem Village accused each other of witchcraft or devil magic. From June to September, people were imprisoned, tried and killed. 20 citizens of Salem were executed. It all started when two young girls, Betty Parris and Abigail Williams, began having unexplained seizures. The girls were the daughter and niece of Rev. Samuel Parris. They called Dr. William Griggs and he simply diagnosed it as witchcraft. When asked who caused these seizures, they blamed their slave, Tituba. Tituba was from the Caribbean and she claimed to be able to perform some sort of voodoo rituals. This led the girls to believe it was her. It is unknown what caused their seizures, but there are some very understandable and informed theories. Some theories could be epilepsy, convulsive ergotism, or girls begging for attention. It's unclear what caused their seizures, but it wasn't witchcraft. There are many causes of uncontrollable seizures, such as epilepsy. Epilepsy is a neurological or brain disorder characterized by sudden, recurring episodes of sensory disturbances (spinal cord damage), loss of consciousness, or seizures (seizures), associated with abnormal electrical activity in the brain. The girls could have hit their heads hard enough to have a seizure, and they could then have developed epilepsy. Another way to develop epilepsy is to be born with it. Epilepsy can be genetic, so girls could have developed epilepsy and had seizures. Epilepsy can kill people. Epilepsy is a very logical theory because 70 percent of all epilepsy cases are mysteries. If the cause of epilepsy is unknown, this would explain the unknown reasons for the seizures. Another cause of seizures could...... middle of paper ......r witchcraft. There can be many reasons for these attacks, and witchcraft is not one of them. Scientists have theories and suspicions about the cause of the girls' seizures. Some explanations could be epilepsy, convulsive ergotism, or the girls wanted tender, loving care. Epilepsy is a disorder that causes seizures, and convulsive ergotism is a condition caused by a fungus found in rye bread that causes seizures, skin irritations, vomiting, choking, and hallucinations. Another theory is that the girls were simply looking for attention. They might have been lonely and wanted to be in the spotlight for once. The causes of these girls' seizures are unknown and will most likely remain unknown unless someone finds real proof of what happened. In 1692, the people of Salem, Massachusetts were not rational. Now America must stay logical and stop believing in fairy tales.
