  • Essay / Gender Roles - Macbeth and Lady Macbeth - 1312

In Shakespeare's old play Macbeth, the women wear the pants, while the men wear the dresses, this is the theme throughout the play. It focuses on Macbeth's marriage and Lady Macbeth plays the lead role, as she convinces her husband to kill Duncan. Shakespeare's play on gender roles shows non-traditional marriage in Scotland; what you see is not what you get. It also shows that how you start is not how you finish. The story of Macbeth shows power and betrayal. It shows power because it shows how you can take matters into your own hands and achieve it. This shows betrayal because he killed Duncan just to get the crown. The non-traditional marriage between Lady Macbeth and Macbeth. Lady Macbeth shows how a woman takes charge of her marriage, showing that she is the woman of the house. She is virile and all-powerful over her husband. Lady Macbeth proves to be the non-traditional woman of Scotland, she differs from the role of a traditional woman because she is not feminine like a woman should be, in fact she wishes to be a man. She tells the spirits to “unsex me here.” (Enotes…unsex me here). This relates to the theme of gender roles because it shows how much Lady Macbeth wishes to be a man. She is more manly than her husband, which shows the non-traditional woman. Lady Macbeth believes that her husband is too kind, friendly and full of milk "to worry, it is too full of the milk of human kindness to take the throne from Duncan" (Gale. Par 3). She fears that Macbeth will get cold feet. He is afraid of the consequences that will follow the murder; She planned the murder herself, because she did not believe that he could do without her help. She fears he is too manly to take the crown. Lady Macbeth is therefore manly enough to plan the murder, but she wants Macbeth to commit the murder. ...... middle of paper ......d Macbeth changes throughout the play, but in the end guilt overcomes them, making them both weak.
