Over the past decade, media violence has become more prevalent than ever, particularly among young people. Every major atrocity, shooting, bombing and act of terrorism are some examples of violence presented through films, video games, televisions, cell phones, new newspapers, websites and magazines aimed at young people and to impressionable young children. On a daily basis, polarizing headlines about heinous and incredibly sad events are becoming normalized against children. This technological era certainly brings advantages to today's modern society, but it also brings many disadvantages that are to the detriment of today's children. In “Is violence in the media harmful to children? ” written by Sasha Emmons, he first explains his dilemma: about half the students were men and half were women. Students were given a detailed survey about video games and the amount of violence present in games. Students rated each question on a scale of one to ten. By evaluating the games, this aimed to test the children's trait hostility. Then, the students were questioned about their parents, their teachers, their grades, any arguments and physical fights in order to detect if hostile behavior was linked to the video games they may have played. However, the study results were not necessarily surprising; Boys, 68 percent, preferred to play more violent games than girls' 22 percent. Boys were about fifty percent more likely to choose a video game with a higher rate of violence than girls who were twenty percent more likely. In every part of this study, boys exceeded girls in their desire for violence and gore in their video games.
