  • Essay / Cleopatra's reign - 1856

Cleopatra VII was the last pharaoh of Egypt. Cleopatra ruled Egypt in 51 BC after the death of her father Ptolemy XII Auletes. Cleopatra's mother was Cleopatra VI and she came to power at the age of 17. Cleopatra ruled Egypt with her two brothers Ptolemy XIII and Ptolemy VIX and her son Ptolemy XV Caesar. She was born in 69 BC in Alexandria and reigned from 51 to 30 BC. Cleopatra was Macedonian, but even though her ancestry was Macedonian, she was still an Egyptian queen and worshiped as a god. She is remembered in history as the last queen of Egypt and her relationships with Julius Caesar and Mark Antony. Cleopatra's rule over Egypt began with the death of her two older sisters and the death of her father. His father was greatly hated by the Egyptians and had left Egypt several years before his death in Rome. Cleopatra aimed to rule alone or attempted to gain more power than her brother over the rule of Egypt. The Ptolemies were allied with the Romans. The Romans grew in power while Ptolemy's power was lacking. Through this, the Romans had gained a stronger hold on Egypt. Cleopatra was the only Ptolemaic pharaoh to speak the Egyptian language. She also adopted the Egyptian religion. She was very intelligent, very strong-willed and a shrewd politician with extraordinary charisma. When she came to power, Egypt was struggling with poor harvests and famine. The drought had prevented the Nile from flowing over their crops. Despite Egypt's struggles, Cleopatra launched an army from Arab tribes east of Pelusium. Meanwhile, Cleopatra and her sister Arsinoe settled in Seria. She started to wage war against her brother. This happened after Pom's death...... middle of paper ...... once again Cleopatra attempted to seize power. At that time, Egypt was in a worse situation as it faced a drought which caused it to have poor harvests. Cleopatra nonetheless planned to bring Egypt back to power. Her plans took her to Marc Antony and he also failed to bring them both to power. Then she committed suicide when her lover Marc Antony died and she could not be returned to power. From this, I believe that Cleopatra's rule over Egypt was a success and not a failure. She failed in what she was trying to achieve and lost Egypt to Rome, which became a Roman province, but the previous pharaohs of Egypt were at fault and not Cleopatra. She tried many ways to bring Egypt to power and in the end she did not succeed. But she will be remembered as the last queen of Egypt and she should be remembered as one of the greatest pharaohs to ever rule Egypt..
