Essay / Theme of death explored in Crabbit Old Woman,...
In the three poems Crabbit Old Woman, Remember and Refugee Mother and Child, the similar theme is death. Remember is a sonnet by Christina Rossetti, which recounts the thoughts of a dying woman imploring her lover to remember her forever, only to change his mind after the Volta. Crabbit Old Woman by Phyllis McCormack tells the story of an old lady's opinion on her nurses' perception of her. Refugee Mother and Child, written by Chinua Achebe, is a moving poem that depicts a mother's unwavering devotion to her dying son. In Remember, the word “memory” is repeated extensively. This highlights the main purpose of the poem, which was to tell the narrator's partner to never forget him. The first “Remember me” is almost like an order, although it is in no way threatening or authoritarian, more desperate. The use of “me,” a personal pronoun, gives the poem a more intimate tone. This makes the reader feel like they are diving deep into the narrator's thoughts, and they are on a very private level of his mind. The repetition shows her protective, almost selfish attitude towards her lover, as she does not want her partner to move forward without her. Even more heartbreaking and poignant is the allusion to the future of the Rossettis and his partner. Even if she doesn't talk about it directly, the reader knows that her partner had imagined a happy ending for them, rather than a tragic one, since she writes: "You tell me about our future that you have planned." The powerful and direct use of “you” almost makes it seem like the narrator is addressing the reader, creating a close relationship. Again, the use of “Remember me” makes it seem like the narrator is begging her lover to remember her, which makes the reader feel her pain. The use of a euphemism...... middle of paper ..... This is what she is referring to when she mentions "carcass" and "beaten heart". Then she once again implores the nurses to get to know her, ending with a defining “see ME.” The reader feels pity for her again and her desperation for the nurses to see her for who she really is. The three poems approach the theme of death in different ways, although they share various devices. Rossetti's Remember and McCormack's Crabbit Old Woman both have a desperate tone: in one, a woman begs her lover to remember (and then forget) her, while in the other , an old lady begs her nurses to see her as a human being. . In contrast, the reader is hit with a harsh reality in Refugee Mother and Child, as Achebe frighteningly describes the conditions of mother and child that lead to death. However, all the poems have a poignant tone at some point, facing death with a brave face..
