In Japan, getting married is one of the big events in life and many young people hope to marry and start a family with someone in their future. Nowadays, there are different types of married life, but the stereotypical image of housekeeping, in which men work outside the home to feed their families and women take care of the household, is still alive among the Japanese. To examine the concept of Japanese marriage, I want to discuss the main features of Japan's gender system in married life and the institution of marriage in Japan. In Japanese marriage and marital roles, I think many people still believed that "men work outside the home." and women do domestic work and care for children” is the ideal gender system in the household. Indeed, it is reasonable for couples for men to work outside the home in terms of income, as it has been shown that women's average income is 60 percent of men's, even though gender discrimination in location work is prohibited by law (Ishii-Kuntz 2003: 211). I think the reason why many people still think "men work outside and women do housework" is because couples who are thinking about getting married are at the age where they see the typical Japanese household in their childhood. Recently, many women are working full-time even after marriage, but compared to about 30 years ago, that was the time when the couple's parents were getting married, the majority of people might have thought that it was the case. It is natural and ideal for men to work outside the home and for women to become housewives when couples marry. They see their parents and receive some influence from their parents who think that way. There are many women who decide to live differently from their mothers by pursuing their own career or dream in addition to getting married, as shown in "...... middle of paper...... people don’t want to change their lives.” habitual way of ideas or life that are naturally taught and generated by the previous generation. There are people who think that the old way of thinking should be changed to adapt to globalization, but the majority of people who run this country, I mean politicians and governors, are the ones who are deeply trapped by these conventional ideas. I thought I wanted to marry someone one day, but it's really vague and I found a negative aspect of marriage in terms of gender role in married life. This is a very valuable opportunity to think about my future life in a more serious and positive way than before, even if it is no longer realistic for me now as a university student. I hope that Japanese society or systems related to marriage will be changed so that my marriage can be positive in the future..
