Essay / The Romantic Victorians - 1695
The Romantic VictoriansFinding a similarity between the Romantic era and the Victorian era can be quite a challenge because of all the differences between them. “This Lime-Tree Bower My Prison” written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge is an excellent example of a literary work from the Romantic era because of the different themes that make it up. The “Lady of the Shallot” by Alfred, Lord Tennyson in the Victorian era is a poem that can describe the society that shaped that era. Both poems share the theme of isolation as the main characters in the poem are isolated from others. The Romantic Era lasted from 1798 to 1834 and was a time full of change. During this time, artists had the freedom to express what they felt through their working arts. The artwork and music of this period are therefore truly expressive. Nationalism was also widely expressed by many artists during this era. This era is primarily shaped by many talented artists recognized nationally and globally. Classical rules were broken in this era and political oppression no longer disappeared on the streets of England. The air smells of freedom to the people who live there, and new frontiers opened up for those who decided to pursue their dreams. Artists bring their imaginations to life in their published artwork. “In various forms, romances shared a characteristic that the Victorians would consider an example of the literary (if not polemical) imagination of the period: a turning point, even an escape, from the tumultuous and confusing here and now” (The Romantics and Their). Contemporaries 11). The Romantic era gave the world the supernatural and mysterious side of art. Creativity is also a word that defines the Romantic era because she brought life to her bed...... middle of paper ......by Victorian society because she did not have a husband. Therefore, she is of no value to society because she cannot contribute to it. Coleridge's isolation is not judged by the society of his time and it does not last as long as the lady's isolation. Another factor that influenced the theme is that the poem "The Lady with the Shallot" is fiction, while the poem "This Linden Tree Under My Prison" is not fiction. Coleridge's poem is more like a dairy starter while Tennyson's is more like a fairy tale. “The Lady and the Shallot” can be compared to the fairy tale Rapunzel because both characters were trapped in a tower due to a curse.
