Why should a child be identified as a boy or a girl and act according to their gender? Gender norms are extremely inherent in society and many conform to these social rules. While there are endless possibilities for study when it comes to gender norms, this article will focus on the construction of masculinity and how it is problematic in the way many people in society perceive and view it. reinforce. POWER, KNOWLEDGE, AND SELF In order to understand how the concept of masculinity was created, we must first examine why norms are so often followed blindly. Foucault believes that there is a relationship between power, knowledge, and the self that encourages our reproduction of societal norms. These three concepts are closely related and all impact each other. Power is evident in almost every aspect of life and Foucault understood it as assumptions of truth which, "when embodied in specific codes of knowledge and practice, give certain people immediate practical power over others” (Foote & Frank, 1999 p. 163). CONCLUSIONOverall, the concept of masculinity is now widely accepted as truth in society. History has shown that men are expected to conform to the standards set by those in power in order to be considered “real men.” Unfortunately, this norm has rarely been challenged and it can cause many problems, including thinking that a man who is out late at night is dangerous, or it can stem from larger social issues such as homophobia. We must therefore stop accepting these standards as true and instead seek our own truths. Social workers must be aware of the power present in working relationships and attempt to help clients construct their own identities while using a minimum of domination and working in the least oppressive manner (Foote & Frank, 1999).
