This is a clear example of micro-level intervention, even if social workers do not go so far as to invite their clients to stay with them. Nonetheless, Leigh was focused on helping Michael on an individual level rather than solving the homeless problem as a whole. Additionally, problems arise with Michael's new atmosphere, or "environment", as he is African American and the entire family is white, as is the school he is enrolled in; this creates an atmosphere in which Michael feels like he does not belong, as he expresses in a poem he writes called "White Walls". Nonetheless, Michael thrives on the acceptance he feels as he gets closer to the Tuohys and the staff at his school, and comes to feel like a member of his community despite his race (Bourne et al, 2009) ; a clear example of the effects that a person's environment and relationships have on their own personality
